When I last blogged, Mark had just left for a couple of weeks due to a personal emergency, causing some chaos, especially with the fact that we suddenly went 24 hours on August 2, when we thought it would be delayed due to a problem with the liquor license. So far, the overnight thing has been pretty good for the store. The overnight crews have really been doing a good job of helping clean up the store, especially getting the stockroom organized for inventory this Monday. Mark came back about a week ago and was working overnights for a week to get the stockroom ready.
The fact that we have a separate overnight crew (including two overnight shift supervisors) means that the daytime management (including me) will rarely have to work overnights. However, one of the overnight supervisors is on vacation , so I will have to fill in Thursday night. I'm not looking forward to it, as nowadays, I go to bed before 7 AM. I hope I can get to sleep when I get home after work in the morning, but I don't know. Nevertheless, it should just be a one time thing, so I'll just suck it up and deal with it. But while Mark was gone, I almost had a sudden overnight shift thrust upon me...
One night, a shift supervisor from another store was supposed to come work the 10 PM-7 AM overnight shift. I had been scheduled 3 PM-10 PM that day, and by 10, she still hadn't arrived. I waited a little while longer to see if she was just late, and by 11, I started to get worried. I had no contact info for this person, so I kept calling everyone I could: Eddie (the manager filling in for Mark), Mark, the district manager, and a couple of other corporate people. I got no answer from anyone, until finally, I called "asset protection" (the number to dial for things relating to the alarm system), and they got in touch with our regional loss prevention manager. He had me stay there while he tried to get someone, and at about midnight, he called me and told me that he couldn't find anyone and to just close the store for the night. I called Eddie (who was scheduled to work in the morning at 7) and left a message on his phone letting him know that he'd have to unlock the door and deactivate the alarm when he comes in. His wife heard the message and woke him up, and he called me back and had me stay until he could come in, which would be about an hour. So I stayed, and a little before 1 AM, he came, and I was finally able to leave. I don't know what happened with that person who was supposed to come in, whether her store didn't let her know, or if she just blew it off, but neither Eddie nor I were very happy about the situation! But I'm just glad I didn't have to stay there until 7 AM!
The week that Mark left, due to the craziness, I ended up working about 46 hours, getting about six hours of overtime! CVS insists that no one work over 40 hours (besides salaried managers and pharmacists), so that they don't get overtime, but there was no choice in this case. I definitely liked that check though! Although I wish I could get some overtime all the time, I do kind of like being limited to 40 hours, since it means I won't have to be stressed out from being there all the time. If I was a salaried assistant manager, I'd probably be there more like 80 hours a week! Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point.
Then this past Saturday, there was an incident at work reminiscent of the infamous Louis Houston incident, which, like that incident, I was (un)fortunately not there to see. One of our cashiers was mad about her schedule, so she demanded to go in the office and see the schedule... while there was a line of about 8-10 customers. (She was clocked in, so she should have checked out some of those customers.) The shift supervisor was busy checking out customers, so she said she'd get the schedule for her afterward. The cashier demanded the keys to the office, which the supervisor didn't give (since we can't give our keys to non-managers). So this cashier grabbed the photo lab keys (which did not include an office key) and tried to get in there. They obviously didn't work, and when the supervisor tried to get the keys back, she actually threw them at her, hitting her hard in the back. (All of this in front of customers!) This whole thing included plenty of yelling, screaming, and cursing by our crazy cashier, after which she went outside and started throwing patio chairs around, almost hitting a passing vehicle. The police were called, but she left by the time they got there. I saw a little bit of it on the security cameras, and it was indeed a crazy sight. She's obviously getting fired (and hopefully arrested), so we are literally down to one non-overnight clerk. The supervisor from this incident also ended up quitting two days later!
Right now, we have Mark, me, our photo lab supervisor (who is also a shift supervisor), one daytime clerk, two overnight shift supervisors, and one overnight clerk. Mark's interviewing some new hires, but if you want to come work at my CVS, now's your chance! I know a few people who have always dreamed of working at CVS with me and who I'm sure will be running to CVS.com to fill out their applications!
Besides what's been going on at work, I have some bad news to report. State Farm (the other driver's insurance from the accident) declined our claim. They took forever to make a decision, but they said that since there's no proof in the police report or the insurance statements that it was the other driver's fault, that they're not liable. Obviously, this is bullshit. A punk kid joyriding with his friends making a LEFT TURN (of course, when making a left turn, you're responsible for making sure you can safely go) crashing into a car driven by someone who has had a very clean driving record for years? Come on now! I called Progressive (our insurance) today to see if they can help us fight this, even though we only have liability insurance with them. Depending on what Progressive says, I'm also planning on getting a copy of the police report and, if possible, the other driver's statement to State Farm. Needless to say, I will never, ever be using State Farm for any of my insurance needs. And on all future cars (I think it's pretty safe to say that mine will be replaced pretty soon if I can recover the money for it), I'm going for full coverage rather than just liability!
On the backyard wrestling front, it's been pretty quiet, but this Sunday is our next event: UWA Screw the Rules! We're doing this event at The Criminal's brother's house in Church Point, LA, our first time holding an event in that city (which is not too far from Lafayette). Already announced is The Criminal defending the UWA World Heavyweight Championship against Lawrence Alfred, which should be a very interesting match. And, in an exclusive bit of news for you, the blog readers, I am currently scheduled to face Derrick Night in a Mid-South Death Match! I hope our staffing problems won't force me to work Sunday, as I definitely don't want to miss this event!
Going a bit more in the pro direction of wrestling, Lawrence, Gaby, and I got together at my house to watch SummerSlam on Sunday. The first two hours were pretty blah, but the main event was awesome, even with the stupid John Cena Superman ending. Daniel Bryan was an awesome surprise, and he totally stole the show! Bret Hart looked great in his brief time in the ring too, and most of The Nexus really looked like they belonged in their spot. I enjoyed the drama of the main event, and though it was a one match show, that one match was definitely worth it! The one big disappointment from SummerSlam was that The Miz didn't cash in Money in the Bank, even though Sheamus was totally knocked out after the match. But I think they're waiting for The Miz to finish feuding with Daniel Bryan (with Bryan hopefully winning the US Title) first. Unfortunately, I missed RAW the next night due to work, but it looks like I didn't miss very much. I'm off today though, so I'll be watching NXT in about half an hour!
Also this month, I added some new additions to my WWE Mattel action figure collection. I got a little RAW ring to put figures in, which I put Triple H and Randy Orton in. They really look like they're having a staredown!
I also went to my bank today and opened a rewards checking account (I previously only had an old, non-rewards one) and a savings account. I started my savings account with $25, and I plan to put $25 a week into it. It will be my fund for WrestleMania XXVII in Atlanta next year! Several of my online friends are going, including a certain someone, so it should be a pretty awesome weekend!
By the way, the reason why my blog tagline says "As seen on NBC!" is because Gaby and I made it onto the NBC broadcast of highlights from WrestleMania XXVI (during the video package covering Shawn Michaels's retirement speech the next night). My good friend Chris Dunshee commented on my Facebook post about it with that, and I laughed so hard, I had to steal it!
Well, that's about it for the past two weeks. I'll try to blog more regularly from now on, so please keep checking back, and feel free to leave me a comment! Thanks for reading!
